It’s been my experience that most criminals aren’t too bright. When they get caught, it’s usually because of something dumb that they forgot or didn’t consider.

If you’re talking about the Guthrie case, note that the kidnapper did not consider the camera. He had to go pick a weed or a plant to try to cover the camera eye. And in so doing, he spent a lot of time on a tile surface that will lead to the authorities estimating his height fairly well. In addition he did not consider the way he was wearing his gun, which is distinctive.
