On a flight to Ireland, on Aer Lingus, DH was seated near a woman who initially seemed ok. However, Aer Lingus is an Irish company and, after doing the flight instructions in English, repeats them in Irish.

The woman began emitting explosively loud (audible through the entire plane) huffs and actually asked a flight attendant whether something couldn't be done about this. When nothing was done, she sulked and bitched to her companion for the rest of the long flight.

It actually ruined her entire flight that she was briefly forced to acknowledge that there was another language than English in the world.

I don't know why she didn't stay home. I'm sure the local Holiday Inn would rent her a room for a couple of weeks, and she could probably avoid the service personnel. I know she wouldn't have tipped them.

The 'Ugly American' is a stereotype for a reason.
