13. Those suggestions do not explain how a '1' turns into an equals sign

They explain why an equals sign could appear, when there should not be any visible character. They do not explain the disappearance of the suggested "1". If it were OCR, I don't think "1" is particularly likely to get seen as an "=" - one is a vertical line with a small horizontalish extension (a "7" would be a more likely misreading), the other two horizontal lines.

having said that, I've now seen reply #5, and that does suggest it's OCR.
