Primal emotions such as fear and hunger take over.

Fear of anything that he can't understand within a 10 second cognitive window.

Hunger for something, anything, everything. The primal brain is signalling "Donnie, time to make your final nest." And like many autocrats in history, they want to feather their nest in case there might be a glorious afterlife - where only the rich live.
