12. Well, to be fair, France abolished the death penalty in 1981

BUT, having said that, there's always long-term prison. And THAT is no picnic. A few years ago, my hubby and I went to a conference where the keynote speaker was someone who did time in a French prison. It was a tale of horrors...just one tiny window at the top of a wall. No TV. Just an hour out of the cell per day. Terrible overcrowding and sanitary conditions, so much so that human rights advocates have decried that environment.

I actually think that would be more fitting than the guillotine.
