On this date in 1980, six American diplomats who had taken refuge in the the Canadian Embassy in Tehran during the Iran hostage crisis, were successfully smuggled out of Iran.

All at great peril to their lives, Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor and his staff hid the Americans for nearly three months before arranging their escape on January 27–28, 1980, using fake Canadian passports to fly them out disguised as a film crew.

If you Google "Thank You Canada", and click on images, you will see the appreciation from Americans for that bravery. From everyday Americans, from President Carter, and later - Ronald Reagan.

For myself, I was at a fancy restaurant in Washington, DC a day or two after the news was leaked to the public. Six Canadians were also, by chance, in the restaurant. When one of the guests at the restaurant heard there was a table of Canadians, he told them their money was no good, their night was on him. Other restaurant guests cheered and sent bottles of champagne to the Canadian's table.

And then MAGA REPUBLICANS elected a seething clinical-narcissist, a black hole of despair, deceit, and wretched debauchery.
