When he became president, he continued the pastime, often down the main thoroughfares of DC.

While there were no cars back then, they still had the concept of “you don’t drive a horse (let alone horse and carriage) full speed through a crowded thoroughfare during the day”.

Twice he was ticketed (I want to say the cop was black) for speeding, though the officer was apologetic about it. Not only did Grant pay the fines, he specifically checked afterwards to make sure the officer wasn’t punished for giving him a ticket.

Now some may say that this doesn’t really matter. It could be argued that there is a difference between a speeding ticket and a felony. Perhaps. I personally think you can extrapolate larger policies from smaller ones. If a president can be charged with a minor infraction, why should he be immune from ones that are 100 times more serious?
