He forsaw that with the advent of television and other electronic media, people would start hearing of shocking or tragic events from around the world, instead of just being aware of those in their local communities. As a result, even though such events may be happening no more frequently on a per capita basis than in the past, or even far less frequently, we develop an impression that horrible things are happening all the time, and can even fall into a state of continual, low or not-so-low -grade trauma.
