Birthright citizenship -- the big one is coming one way or the other [View all]
Supreme Court to hear Trump birthright citizenship order case (CNBC)
The Supreme Court on Friday said it will hear arguments in a case that will determine if President Donald Trump can undo automatic citizenship for people born in the United States.
Trump, on his first day back in the White House on Jan. 20, issued an executive order that said babies born in the U.S. more than 30 days after that order were not entitled to be issued citizenship documents if their parents were temporary visitors or illegal aliens.
Before Trumps order, there was little dispute that the U.S. Constitutions 14th Amendment, with rare exceptions, meant that children born in the country were automatically U.S. citizens, regardless of their parents status.
...
If Trump gets what he wants, this paves the way for a whole mess of new litigation.
Because anchor babies are not all literally babies.
For example -- What if an anchor baby is grown up and currently serving in the military?
We've already had similar cases for people brought in while still small children, so it's not a stretch.
And that's just one off the top of my head, there will be all manner of issues going to court.
If Trump doesn't get what he wants? Also very big.
And I don't think he'll just back down. There may be a "state of siege" ahead.
Or am I just being paranoid about that?
