L O N D O N, March 2 -- Like silent sentinels in a foreign land, two giant Buddhas have gazed out from the cliffs of Bamiyan in Afghanistan since the 5th century.

Today, it has been confirmed that their gaze will be lowered forever under a hail of tank and rocket fire— ending perhaps thousands of years of religious tolerance.

Sources from the Afghan Northern Alliance have confirmed that Afghanistan's hard-line Islamic warriors, the Taliban started demolishing Buddha statues in Bamiyan today. And they plan to destroy Buddha images all over the country
