US. warships aren’t an unusual sight off the coast of South Padre Island. Decommissioned Navy vessels frequently are brought to the Port of Brownsville to be cut into scrap metal.

Nowadays, however, beachgoers and boaters might see other battleships in the area — manned, armed and ready for war.

President Donald Trump has deployed several Navy warships to into the Gulf of Mexico to fight the Mexican “invasion” and drug deliveries. It’s all for show and a big waste of taxpayers’ money.

At least three destroyers, the USS Cole, Gravely and Spruance, already have been sent to the area, and more could be coming. The president announced the deployment in March, saying they were to address our “invasion” of illegal immigrants and drug smugglers.

But Trump is a showman, and this overuse of military equipment and personnel makes for a good show. And despite his talk about trimming government and cutting taxes, this administration is turning out to be just as wasteful as his first term, which added about $8 trillion to our national debt.
