(40,769 posts)I remember back when RR was President -- even as a not-too-politically involved youngster I could see that RR was confusing Wall Street prosperity with what was good for the country, even though they are often at odds, when he visited the NYSE and praised all the financial operators who were basically moving money in circles, taking a little off the top with each pass, rather than the people producing actual products -- and who, for the last few decades, have not been allowed to share in the increasing prosperity brought about by their increasing productivity, but instead who were gradually being replaced by machines, and now, by software which can't do one-tenth the job it's called on to do, but which costs so little relative to human labor it's virtually free. All perfectly in tune with the "Chicago School" belief that only dividends count, not people.
