Instead of using the latest fighter jets, the CIA used obsolete WW2 B-26 bombers, which "missed many of their targets and left most of Castro's air force intact." (Wikipedia)

Also, the CIA was supposed to "take out" the radar installation at the Bay of Pigs, but did not do it, which contributed to the failure of the attack.

(CIA Director Allan Dulles hated JFK)
