The United States’ reputation on a global scale has sunk since President Donald Trump took office, as China’s favorability increased, according to a new analysis from Morning Consult exclusively reported by Axios.

The intelligence company found that the United States had a net favorability rating of -1.5 while China scored an 8.8 as of the end of May — a leg up that formed at the beginning of March. In January 2024, the United States’ rating stood above 20 and China remained in the negatives.

"When assessed by country, our data indicates the damage to America’s reputation is pervasive: Since January 2025, the overwhelming majority of countries simultaneously exhibit worsening views of the United States and improving views of China, with no single country clearly driving the overall result,” the analysis says. “Only in Russia have views of America meaningfully improved.”

China’s favorability rating has particularly increased since Trump announced his “Liberation Day” tariffs in April, which established a 10% tax baseline for all countries.
