It was just a normal Saturday morning as high school student Marcelo Gomes Da Silva was traveling with his teammates to volleyball practice. The honors student was looking forward to participating with fellow band members at the Milford, Massachusetts High School the following day.

Instead, Marcelo was stopped and arrested by Trump’s Gestapo Ice agents. His teammates were totally traumatized and never made it to their practice. The commencement event turned into a city protest demonstration by citizens furious that one of their own was apprehended. Marcelo was a model student — a leader among the boys at his school. He arrived in the US when he was five-years old.

The 18-year-old’s detention by federal immigration officers sparked a post-commencement protest Sunday, with more than 1,000 demonstrators at Milford Town Hall lining the sidewalk and waving signs condemning ICE and calling for Gomes’s release.

“Hands off our kids,” they chanted.

Friends, school officials, advocates, and local politicians spoke out against the detainment of Gomes, a high school junior who has attended Milford Public Schools most of his childhood.
