When the credits of the film started to roll, the audience, adorned in gala gowns and tuxedos, rose to their feet for a Cannes tradition - an extended standing ovation. The applause lasted a full seven minutes, with Bono waving to the crowd from the orchestra section as if passing by on a parade float. Once the claps thinned, he took to the microphone to deliver his gratitude to everyone from his family to Steve Jobs (the film premieres on Apple TV Plus on May 30). Once the thank yous were through, he turned his speak political, reminding the audience that the Cannes Film Festival began in 1939 as a direct response to the Venice Mostra festival swaying to political pressure to aligns its winners with Benito Mussolini's preferences.

"The festival was set up to fight fascism… Slava Ukraine," he said, concluding his speech to another round of feverish applause.
