Is this a truly new diagnosis or have they been "watchful waiting" after detecting rising PSA (prostate specific antigen) scores and performing annual DREs (digital rectal examination? AFAIK, it is unusual to suddenly find a metastasized to the bone form of prostate cancer if routine screening has been carried out beforehand (which one would think would be the case for a president).

Whoever you are, it is v important for men over 40 or 50 yo to get routine prostate cancer screening. If the cancer is detected before it has spread beyond the gland itself, the prognosis for a cure is very good (and not good at all if spread has occurred, particularly to the bones).
