2. Ah, yes, the Flag Code

The rules were fairly strict. I learned them in Scouting. One measure of respect I recall is that when a flag has become worn, it should be retired properly by burning it. In our Scout Troop, we would save the grommets left after the flag had burned. These would be buried respectfully.

Sometime in the 1970s, SCOTUS ruled that burning the flag in protest and other uses of the Stars and Stripes were protected Free Speech under the First Amendment. Since then, we've seen the Olympic swim team wear the Stars and Stripes and certainly the "Blue Line" flag as well as other bastardizations have been flown contrary to the Flag Code.

As a somewhat radical leftist, I find it curious that I yearn for more respect for our nation's flag.
