and I think you did the right thing. I returned a gift to a neighbor at Christmas. Last Spring, they cut down a stand of mature, healthy pines on the edge of their yard. I stopped talking to them then. I don't know what they thought a gift, which they left on my porch, would do. I thought about what to do overnight. I didn't want them to think I accepted it, so I left it at the end of their drive.
Was the decision hard to make? Yes. Did my choice show the courage of my convictions? Yes. It was a bridge I'm glad I burned.
In your case, maybe your friend will understand you better and think about their position.
