(180 posts)While I understand the sentiment behind this gesture, I'm kind of lukewarm about it, especially after hearing his response.
I'm sure every one of us know (or used to know) at least one person who would vote with the strict purpose of angering a liberal/someone they hate, etc. I've seen many R's who fit this bill.
With that being the case, anything that would create the desire for someone to vote in such a fashion is something we should collectively avoid. If he offered you this card without any politics behind it, I could EASILY see why returning it with said reasons would anger him.
I haven't cut R's out of my life. But I'm not actively engaging them either. If engagement happens, I remain open minded with them as long as they offer me the same.
I have personally had encounters with R's where through thoughtful discussion, they have changed their tune a little bit. It's not often. But every little bit helps.
Hopefully other people can have similar results.
Just something to think about.
