I've been watching Masters of the Air on Apple TV [View all]
My uncle was a B-17 navigator in WWII and was killed in the winter of 1945 somewhere over Germany not long before the end of the war in Europe. My father was 12 at the time and never really got over that loss. I've enjoyed watching the show to see what it may have been like to be a crewman in one of those. Harrowing to say the least.
As I watch I am deeply saddened by the realization that the sacrifices made to stop fascism under Hitler and the Germans are being spat upon by Americans 80 years later. The US is becoming the 1930s/1940s Germany of today. The hate for others in our nation, the turn to fascism here at home, the fawning over an incompetent and dangerous leader, the possible upcoming destruction of our constitutional democracy, the possible upcoming persecution of those not sufficiently obsequious to Trump, and the fear of the nations around the world are frightening parallels to the Nazi regime. I used to be concerned about making that comparison as it felt hyperbolic. It really doesn't anymore.
My father died in December of 2019 and was scared to death of Trump and what he would do. I'm so happy he didn't live to see his fellow Americans welcome this dangerous man back into the White House. I'm sure he would weep as he contemplated his big brother's death in defense of the exact opposite of what we have become. How did we so easily abandon those principles?
I have little hope now but will be part of the resistance no matter what. I'm happy I have this community as support.
