'I am what I am' should include hope. You can change for the better. Hopelessness about others is a dead end. When others here suggest that you rethink what you did, they do it from hope.
You yourself can hope he forgives you for being ungrateful for his giving spirit, and simply say you're sorry you hurt his feelings.
You can undo this and keep a friend, a human being, no matter what you think of "independents."
If you're willing to treat others as you yourself would like to be treated, now is a good time to do that.
