Steve Schmidt's "The Warning" on Subsack referenced (and played a clip from) FDR's "Fala" speech He took their lie that he had left his Scottish Terrier Fala behind on an Aleutian Island and then sent a destroyer to pick him up, at a cost to taxpayers of millions of dollars. Never happened. But FDR took it and turned it into political capital just like that. The clip is a bit longer than it needs to be because the audience is laughing so hard. But it's still pretty short.
