ex parte, private telephone calls with a convicted criminal defendant at the defendant's home while the criminal defendant's criminal case is matter which is pending before that Court.
A judge contacting a criminal defendant directly, without the presence of their attorney, is a serious violation of judicial ethics, considered an "ex parte communication" which undermines the fairness and impartiality of the legal process, as it allows one side to potentially influence the judge without the other side knowing or being able to respond; this is generally prohibited under most judicial codes of conduct and could lead to disciplinary action against the judge.
