New Hawaiian law limits corporate spending on politics, other states work to follow suit

The Brief
New legislation signed into law on Thursday bans corporations from political spending in Hawaii.
Proponents say the law circumvents Citizens United, the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled limiting corporate spending on political broadcasts was a violation of the First Amendment.
Hawaii is the first state to enact such a law, but over a dozen others, including California and Montana, are working toward similar legislation.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Hawaii’s Democratic Governor on Thursday signed into law a bill to stop corporations and "dark money" groups from spending unlimited amounts of money on politics.

The Aloha State’s S.B. 2471 states that because governments grant a corporation its powers, Hawaii can simply decline to grant the power to spend on elections. The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2027.

I hope I see you around..

I don’t know if you ever saw the movie Colossal..But normally I rarely see movies I relate to, but the protagonist moves back home to her small town after losing her job as an alcoholic and then gets into confrontations with these hateful men. In the end she vanquishes the creeps and evades her awful preachy boyfriend, but they cut to her face and she has this “oh shit” look as she realizes all her old normal problems are still there- work and health..
I was wryly chuckling thinking about it.

Hope to see you around.

rules.

They usually back both candidates so whoever we get is owned.

We are lucky to have Mazie, Brian, Jill Tokuda and a handful of legislators...Kim Coco, Ikaika Hussey, Les Ihara.

I worked on a sister bill for so long, so many cycles, and watched power play along until the last conference committee. I half can't believe our good luck, other half barely dare to believe it.

Here is hope!
