Elie Mystal: Supreme Court gutting Voting Rights Act is about again making US an apartheid state

Elie Mystal--legal correspondent for The Nation-explains how the Voting Rights Act ended American-style apartheid--which lasted from 1787 until 1965. Now with the GOP Supreme Court gutting the Act this week the white right once again is seeking to usher in a new form of electoral apartheid.

As a practical matter, does the decision to gut voting rights by the 6 mean that the USSC no longer has jurisdiction in2herbs Friday #2
IMO, The issue is about gerrymandering, they ruled that it is legal for political walkingman Friday #4

Thanks, great video, maybe the most significant thing to happen since civil rights act itself. So when everyone gets a chance, get a glass of wine and listen (or in my case bourbon and coke) .

It is really a shame that I really do not know many people that even give a shit these days about civil rights/equality issues. I grew up in the heart of the civil rights movement and this is heartbreaking for me. ☮

gerrymandering but race cannot be considered under Sec. 2 of the CVA. The fact that black voters overwhelmingly vote Dem, it becomes one and the same.

It's like when someone claims they are not racist but their actions are racist.

As the video says since this SCOTUS (in effect) has ruled basically that we have progressed to a point that it no longer an issue. The only remedy would be to expand the SCOTUS, otherwise they would just overrule Congressional actions.

I suspect this is not the end. I fully expect the Respect for Marriage Act (2022) which requires states to recognize valid same-sex marriages performed in other states. And then the next action to visit Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) that actually legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
