Former UConn standout Nika Muhl has surgery for torn ACL, will miss 2nd straight WNBA season

Former UConn women's basketball star Nika Mühl will miss her second consecutive WNBA season after she underwent successful surgery to repair a torn ACL and meniscus in her right knee, the Seattle Storm announced Wednesday.

Mühl suffered the injury while competing for Croatia in the FIBA Women's EuroBasket Qualifiers last month alongside incoming UConn recruit Olivia Vukosa. The 6-foot point guard also sustained a torn ACL in her left knee in October 2024 while playing for Turkish club Beşiktaş, which resulted in Mühl missing the entirety of the 2025 WNBA season.

An international recruit out of Zagreb, Croatia, Mühl joined UConn ahead of the 2020-21 season, quickly earning a prominent role within Geno Auriemma's setup and distinguishing herself as a historic playmaker. Mühl holds UConn's single-season (284) and career (686) records for assists, playing in 139 games across her four-year run in Storrs.

She was selected with the No. 14 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Storm, one of two UConn players drafted that season alongside Aaliyah Edwards, but was largely relegated to the bench in her rookie year with the West Coast team. Mühl returned from her first ACL injury last winter to play for Sopron Basket, but she suffered an ankle injury that derailed her stint with the Hungarian club after 13 games.
