I see the button and have pressed it before and after the part I want in bold. Nada. I have tried typing in the code and nada. What am I doing wrong?

Bolding and other in-post html directives were disabled as a result of the hacking DU suffered.

(118,515 posts)1. The HTML coding function was turned off several weeks ago
by the administrators because DU was hacked. Therefore, text markups like bold, italics, excerpts and blockquotes cannot be included in any post. They are working on the issue.
