In a recent Variety interview for his new comedy Spy, director Paul Feig was asked how he felt about the tiny man-babies who claim his all-female Ghostbusters reboot will retroactively ruin their childhood:
The Internet is really funny I love it, but I hate it at the same time [...] The first wave when you make an announcement like that is overwhelmingly positive. Everyones so happy and youre like, This is great. Then comes the second wave and youre like, Oh my God. Some of the most vile, misogynistic sh** Ive ever seen in my life.
Feig talked in particular about the vicious remarks he saw on Twitter, saying The biggest thing Ive heard for the last four months is, Thanks for ruining my childhood. Its going to be on my tombstone when I die. Its so dramatic. Honestly, the only way I could ruin your childhood is if I got into a time machine and went back and made you an orphan.
The director says that after receiving a particularly hateful tweet (most of which would likely be even worse if Feig was a woman), he often checks out the offenders profile: I figure its some wacked out teenager. But almost constantly its someone whose bio says, Proud father of two! And has some high end job. Youre raising children and yet youre bashing me about putting women in my movie?

(33,984 posts)I'll take the opinion of someone who who just escaped the studio system then proceeded to shake things up. Paul Feig is paying attention. Women see movies too. We buy tickets too.

(4,035 posts)He decided to capitalize on the popularity of the idea of the all-woman Ghostbuster sequel, to launch a "more conventional" threequel, that is, an all-man one. He then wants to saturate the franchise with shitty spin-off films to make sure that the all-woman Ghostbusters will be pushed to the side. Barf!

(17,997 posts)That sucks! And I used to like him.
The remake has to give life to the original. I guess that's not enough. Additionally, I would assume they have to have permission to do this, they can't just redo a movie without the owner signing off on it.
Eesh.
