(40,416 posts)Then there's the whistle thing.
I have been posting this clip all over DU tonight.
One can tell that Bogie and Bacall are in love. The script isn't that great, but by the end of the scene, it just crackles. And Betty pwns Bogie.

(40,416 posts)Bogie said it to Mary Astor in the earlier film, in a cynical way. Maybe that is deliberate here. Regardless, the two bring the scene home. Love conquers all.
And I agree, it is all there in the end. And Bacall delivers quite an ending. Myself, I like "It's even better when you help" more than the whistle thing, which is only the cherry on top of what has gone before.
And I agree. The scene is absolute dynamite, which is why I have been posting it all over DU tonight. Rachel just played the whistle part tonight, but she missed the "It's even better when you help".
Myself, I think helping is much better than just whistling. Both Bogie and Bacall would undoubtedly agree.
It is an awesome scene.

(42,510 posts)And her "look" was from having a difficult time looking bogie in the eyes, so her head is tiled slightly down, eyes up--quite a look indeed

(7,682 posts)in the last 30-40 years with that kind of presence at nineteen? There have been great nineteen year old actresses in great roles (Jennifer Lawrence), but when was the last time American film portrayed young women with such poise and elegance? Bergman in Casa Blanca is another example.
Glowing. Can't take your eyes off of them.
Come to think of it, though, Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone was just fucking mesmerizing. Much presence, poise and elegance in that role.
