"I have nothing against Barbara Comstock, but I hate sexist twat," he wrote, according to the Virginian-Pilot.
FitzSimmonds later deleted that comment and posted an apology, writing "I was trying to say that I don't appreciate sexist stereotypes and apparently used one myself," as quoted by the newspaper.
The state Republican Party treasurer later told the Virginian-Pilot in an email that he thought he had used the word "twaddle," meaning foolish speech.
"Also to be clear," he added in the email, "my post was not about Barbara Comstock. It was relating to the sexist stereotypes being used by the woman posting."

My phone offered no suggestions when I typed twaddle.
