I don't think I'll ever understand the absurd reaction people have to breasts.

(115,177 posts)when people here insisted that its disgusting and women should breastfeed in restrooms if they had to feed their babies while out in public.
Just as the views on issues like rape culture and street harassment have improved here in recent years, this should not be mistaken for something about which we always had support from our democratic allies.

(19,926 posts)Unbelievable.

(115,177 posts)It's lumped in with fried chicken and the olive garden as examples of stupid shit that DUers fight about.
Nice, huh.

(19,926 posts)such as this would have that attitude and several other attitudes I've seen on here that aren't very pretty.
I wonder if it's a geographical thing. I've lived my adult life in either a big city or very liberal area and I'm astounded at how backwards a lot of people can be in their thinking.

(55,498 posts)though I have observed many of them seem to be from the Northwest. I think that is coincidence more than anything else. The key point is they have reinforcement for extremely reactionary ideas. It sometimes spreads beyond gender to race and homosexuality. Remember all the angst threads in response to a single thread about white privilege? Or the "am I homophobic if I'm not attracted to men" thread? They express what they can get away with, and since they have free reign expose their inner selves on issues of gender, they do so.

(19,926 posts)Or if you do, there's more sexism towards men than women.
You completely missed the point being made. That people are equating breast feeding as being as frivolous an argument as one about the Olive Garden and whatever else that was that was mentioned.

(55,498 posts)It's not like we're talking about something really important, like marijuana legalization.

(11,841 posts)I dont care where a woman feeds her kid. And i find it hard to believe that would ever be an argument HERE of all places.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)and therefore you did actually miss the point of the post. And after our discussion this morning I wouldn't be surprised as to why.
Again, glad to hear you feel that way.

(11,841 posts)We saw a lady sitting on a bench feeding her child and she told me how when she did that many years ago, she wrapped herself up so much to "hide" it she thought she looked like a cocoon because she used to get dirty looks. And most surprising was the fact that most of the "looks" came from women and not men! This was in the mid 80s.
I did kinda skip over the initial subject i guess because I thought it must have been a joke about the arguing here.
BainsBane
(55,498 posts)Why "HERE of all places"? Do you actually read what is posted about gender on this site?
And why would you compare breastfeeding infants to the Olive Garden? How is it a "first world problem"?

(11,841 posts)People on DU tend to be talking about issues that are a bit more serious. Of course, there are a LOT of different parts to DU and maybe I just havent hit the right ones. I just thought it was laughable that people were arguing about an Olive Garden
As I said in an earlier post that you must not have read, my comment was a reaction to reading the statement about that arguing. It had nothing to do with breast feeding and I never mentioned it. Its not unusual for threads to branch out onto other topics as they progress. And I've also noticed over the years that MANY getting riled up over the least little comment that they may not like. Sometimes its like I'm reading an 8th grade chatroom.
For the record, I have no issues with a woman breastfeeding her child. Its the best food for the child in my opinion, as long as the woman is able to do it.

Sad we keep slipping backwards, I know it's Texas but...???!!!? When I managed a store and was asked by the mother if she could breast feed, I always led her to the most comfortable chair. I know I live in a blue state, yet this boggles my mind.
And yes redqueen, I did miss the threads where people think this is wrong.
Thanks for your thread.

(115,177 posts)Moms breastfeeding in public experience varying degrees of scorn in most western countries.
cinnabonbon
(860 posts)call breastfeeding obscene. I mean, wtf?
I don't think they actually mind babies getting fed. It's just that there's a woman who is doing something they don't approve of (using breasts -that are supposed to titillate them - for something that has nothing to do with them at all).
Love the gifs, by the way.

(115,177 posts)and toddlers.
Patriarchy is a giant fucking stain on humanity and too many people do their best to prop it up.
cinnabonbon
(860 posts)Instead of giving mothers grief over breastfeeding, the weaker-minded people (I'd say 'men', but I've seen women buy into this too, which is a shame) can be pro-active about their issues. They can look away.
But no, that wouldn't prop up the patriarchy, now would it.
redqueen
(115,177 posts)And you're exactly right that many women are more than happy to try to push their patriarchal indoctrination onto other women and girls.
cinnabonbon
(860 posts)It's like they can't understand that they're putting themselves down at the same time, because they're women too.

Cause you're completely wrong. It isn't be as bad in some other countries but your comment is just ignorant.
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)And you don't actually need to be accompanied by a breastfeeding mom (although I have been, on occasion) to notice that the Europeans are generally much less uptight about this.
redqueen
(115,177 posts)But if you actually talk to women about their experiences you'll find that outside France and the Nordic countries (which are far better), there are still plenty of people who think women should go to a private room, who think their opinion about when to wean infants should matter to mothers, etc.
cinnabonbon
(860 posts)that mothers should breastfeed in the restrooms, because having the baby eat in the restaurant is not sanitary?
