Cate Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969 in Australia to an American father and an Australian mother. She has an older brother and an younger sister. When she was ten years old, her 40-year old father died of a sudden heart attack. Her mother never remarried, and her grandmother moved in to help her mother. Cate graduated from Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992 and, in a little over a year, had won both critical and popular acclaim. On graduating from NIDA, she joined the Sydney Theatre Company's production of Caryl Churchill's "Top Girls", then played Felice Bauer, the bride, in Tim Daly's "Kafka Dances", winning the 1993 Newcomer Award from the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle for her performance.

I might have to save it. Hope you don't mind.

(4,035 posts)Panning from the feet up as if who she is doesn't matter - just her body. Lingering on her body. As she points out, they don't do that to the male actors, even though many of them are just as much in designer duds as the female actors. Armani, D&G, all those snappy suits, and the men are usually (I'm sure you can find exceptions) filmed from the face and then down, or in full figure. Women - start at the feet, and if you don't get to the face, it doesn't really matter because it's their bodies that are the focus.

(20,219 posts)You can learn a lot by noting what the camera person (usually guy--very male dominated field) focuses on. This is true for anything you're veiwing...teevee, "news" , movies, etc.
If it's a female in the camera sights, you can be sure that you'll get a lot of lonnnnng lingering ass, boob and crotch-shots.

(37,748 posts)I imagine many people who maintain a fictional patina of cleverness believe that only the less-than-evolved purchase a nice thing for its own sake, and the only true value in a thing is how often it's gawked at.

(7,237 posts)because I wanted other people to notice it. The few expensive things I have bought were for my own pleasure.
This is by no means incomprehensible... unless perhaps one is the sort who seeks continual approval from others.

(115,177 posts)Maybe the ones in underwear commercials, but red carpets?
That reminds me of a trash bag commercial that shows a woman looming over a few hunky garbage men and one fat one, and which one is shown in her house at the end? The fat one. Can you imagine the reverse? Hollywood just can't stop.

(50,940 posts)The only reason I posted the link was for reference. I don't watch that crap. I think the whole red carpet thing is ludicrous. "Who are you wearing?" (dresses, suits, jewelry, shoes, even fingernails). As if those gilded products make the person. And E's "glam cam" was, to put it mildly, crude. As is most of most of the popular media's obsession with looks over substance.

(68,868 posts)It's tempting to attribute this to male cameramen, and that may be part of it, but the stuff Joan Rivers et al get away with on Fashion Police (on E!) is something you'd expect out of Howard Stern. Among the games they play on that show are:
Starlet or Streetwalker?

(148,432 posts)I remember seeing her in "Oscar and Lucinda," and commenting to my wife that I thought she'd become a real star, based on her very focused acting. And so she has. Outspoken and down to earth, she's one of my favorite actors.
