By Hemant Mehta, December 16, 2018
It’s never easy to criticize your own community, but Drew McCoy (a.k.a. Genetically Modified Skeptic) does a nice job picking apart a handful of comments he’s heard other atheists make about Christianity.
For example, some of them say “The Bible is written by savages.” McCoy says that’s not true and makes our side look ignorant He includes the disclaimer right up front that he’s not saying all atheists says these things. But he has heard them, which is why he’s addressing them. There’s plenty to criticize about religion that we don’t need to generalize or use sloppy arguments to make our point. Kudos to Drew for holding our side to a higher standard.
Please note: "Some" not "all".

(4,516 posts)have had atheist parents who raised their kids to be atheists.
I think most were raised as Christians and know what they were taught but rejected it as I have.
So it seems sort of wrong to think atheists are ignorant of what Christianity teaches.

(1,166 posts)My husband and I are 41 and 43, and we were both raised as atheists. I am always amazed at what my husband wasn't told about the Christian mythos. He had a Catholic mom and and Jewish dad.
I was raised by an atheist and was told all the stories, and I loved cartoons Superbook. I read every holy book I could find.
My hubby didn't even know who Noah was, and he was first introduced to the Christian fabula through literature.
I enjoyed telling him the Old Testament stories as much as I did telling him about Gilgamesh. It figures we met in a Professor of Ancient Greek's public college welcome.
I guess we're rare, but I just thought I'd add my two cents.

(24,664 posts)on any topic? Where do you start and where does it end?
Mr McCoy is simply inserting an untruth about atheists into the general dialogue. Few if any atheists believe that the Buy-bull was written by savages, but plenty of Xians who read this will now believe that atheists think the Buy-bull was written by savages.

Democrats just don’t get Republicans....
No shit Sherlock! Insanity is not rational.
Most atheists were brought up in christian homes. I don’t need any more “schooling”.
I spent every summer of my youth in some Christian “Bubble” School.

(20,018 posts)it WAS written by people with access to a WHOLE LOT LESS knowledge about the planet they were standing on and the universe they lived in.
So, by today's standards, it WAS written by the ignorant.
And that's giving them the benefit of the doubt that they weren't just intentionally conning people from the get-go.
(Probably doesn't need to be said in this group, but seemed like it needed an answer)
