(2,263 posts)What’s so hard to understand about that? The article is wrong about one thing - it’s not just a favorite of Jews and Italians, but if pretty much any European immigrant, especially the generation that arrived just post-WWII.
In our Ukrainian household, they were omnipresent, eaten with harsh black tea for breakfast, or nibbled as an easy dessert any time. I will never forget that taste from my childhood, almondy and mildly sweet and super crunchy.

(29,540 posts)I could not understand the appeal when they suddenly started appearing on the table, nor did I ever learn to like them.
(Dad’s folks were Ukrainian, Mom’s were Polish/German, FWIW.)
