In December 1944, WWII seemed to be nearing its end. But, Hitler had other plans. He launched the brutal Battle of the Bulge, catching the Allies by surprise. The 101st Airborne Division fared the hellish cold and the powerful German attack, immortalized in General McAuliffe's reponse 'Nuts!'

Wiki. - Battle of the Bulge.. The "Bulge" was the largest and bloodiest single battle fought by the United States in World War II and the third-deadliest campaign in American history.
It was one of the most important battles of the war, as it marked the last major offensive attempted by the Axis powers on the Western front. After this defeat, Nazi forces could only retreat for the remainder of the war...

and his unit was string signal wire through the snow. Between being hit by German guns, or freezing to death, they lost every man whose rank was above PFC. He was a PFC and led his group out successfully; he received a Bronze Star for that.

He also had some nasty frostbite and had trouble with the skin on his feet forever. He also hated snow for the rest of his life.

My mom's brother was in the tank corp and was with Patton's army when they came to the rescue. He and my dad did not know each other until after the war.

during a critical battle. The frostbite, snow and more were horrible, and thank heaven Patton successfully entered that desperate situation.

Thanks for adding this, very interesting and your family must be very proud of their efforts.
My Dad was AAA in the Rhineland where they saw in intense action 1944-45 that I have to research more.
