(12,521 posts)Clover sets the nitrogen in the ground also, grows short, drought resistant. I bag the the first months worth of grass clippings in the spring for the compost pile. Its marinating now with a summers worth of banana skins and comfrey. In late spring
turned and screened its s great soil.
My grandfather taught me
grow your dirt first. He could look at the soil
put a small taste on the tip of his tongue and tell you the ph of the stuff.
Didnt do the numbers but knew the balance and how to fix it if it didnt taste right.

(13,923 posts)But it is still coming down, I just hope I still have yummy Kale growing under there! It has thrived in the cold so far. I like the thoughts of some insects biting the dust/snow too.

(12,521 posts)My dog would uncover it from the snow and chow down. Unwittingly also leaving it open for the rabbits.

(13,923 posts)a wire fence because my dogs love to dig. I don't see many rabbits in my neighborhood, maybe all of outdoor cats get them when they are babies? Squirrels on the other hand fill the "forrest" of my old subdivision.

(12,521 posts)Believe it or not our rabbits are very well behaved. They leave our crops alone. My dog is a small 20 pound havanese
a couple of the rabbits are very close in size to him, plus they get along with each other. They dont view him as a threat and Roscoe loves the little power pellets they leave for him. He thinks theyre treats.
I spoil our rabbits though
Ive built hutches out of downed branches for them in the field behind us giving them a safer place for a burrow. Plus they get the winter veggie scraps that usually go into the compost.
The rabbits actually keep the cats out of the yard they can get territorial. Last winter the rabbits pooped so much it looked like a hundred pound bag of dog kibble was scattered under one of the cedar trees
deer were seen snacking on that. Winters are interesting in our yard.

(12,521 posts)Say of about 20 degrees or colder for about 2 to three weeks will reduce the tick population in the spring.
It all good. Hoping that happens this January or February
not now.
