Breakfast Tuesday 16 December 2025

Later this morning I'll be making scrambled tofu with veggies and a pot of hot tea.

Today the Battle of the Bulge begins in 1944 in the Ardennes forests on Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Nazi Germany. The Nazi High Command in an attempt to force the Allies into a favorable peace treaty for them attacked, it was a total surprise to the Allies. It was also starting to snow, heavily and somewhere in that terrain my late father in law of blessed memory, Jack was a 22 yr old radioman with literal cold feet.

The Germans achieved a total surprise attack on the morning of 16 December 1944, due to a combination of Allied overconfidence based on the favorable defensive terrain and faulty intelligence about Wehrmacht intentions, poor aerial reconnaissance due to bad weather, and a preoccupation with Allied offensive plans elsewhere. American forces were using this region primarily as a rest area for the U.S. First Army, and the lines were thinly held by fatigued troops and inexperienced replacement units. The Germans also took advantage of heavily overcast weather conditions that grounded the Allies' superior air forces for an extended period. American resistance on the northern shoulder of the offensive, around Elsenborn Ridge, and in the south, around Bastogne, blocked German access to key roads to the northwest and west which they had counted on for success. .

From Wikipedia..Funny effect war stories have on the brain. I read years ago in a piece written by Alison Taylor that “war and sports” metaphors and humor are hallmarks of corrupt corporations. It made sense. But it’s a big part of culture broadly now.

The scrambled veggies and tofu sound yummy ..

I'm the only one up so far. I'm not particularly hungry, so brunch will happen later. Not sure what it will be. Eggs are a possibility.

Ducky is exhausted. I got tired of him as well. He ran around inside the house and barked at the digging equipment for most of four hours. They'll run it again today. Ugh! Let the good times roll.

Edit to add: Ducky just came out to greet me, saw I wasn't eating, and curled up resting in the recliner.

I remember eating like that on restricted calorie diets - 1200 calories a day - I was on a bunch in my youth. Each main meal would be about 300 cals on average with two snacks of 100 cals in between. That sounds like a meal you could keep at under 350 cals.

As I am half way around the world from you guys .
May I please join your breakfast thread Irisblue?

I could use some structure in my life. I mentioned my grandad in a thread yesterday. He was very annoying ;-/ (always telling me to do this or that when I wanted to do that or the other), but one thing that made him very functional was that he lead a very structured life. I could use that..

Assuming I am allowed by IrisBlue , I will be having dosa and coconut chutney for breakfast in about three hours. It’s a breakfast staple in these parts:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dosa_(food)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_chutney

We have coconuts in our yard and so we never buy any.

Sounds good .

I am trying a Citizen Science project using DU in a way (to sort of organize my episodic memory). I am pretty disorganized ;-/. My thinking hasn’t been very clear, but I use DU because I cluster it with Wikipedia/Stack Exchange/Gutenberg and places like that, but factoring in politics as a part of human life.

So I wanted to do it like a normal human being and say hi to the humans I am
talking to here ..heh.. I am more socially awkward than I realized …I have only really talked to Rhiannon before.

Is that a flower or a butterfly in your icon? I recently have started noticing how images help one remember fast..maybe even down to a specific day.
