We just had our first French press coffee

The grandkids got me a Williams Sonoma gift card for Xmas. So, what the hell.

I'll have to find a way to tactfully request something else next year. The last time they gave me one, I went to the local store and got dissed big time. Apparently, I don't dress to Galleria standards. Ok, I never do, but it was the coldest day of the year and I was doing errands. All old clothes. They behaved as if I'd just come off the streets to get warm and would go back to the encampment later. I finally had to buttonhole somebody to wait on me. Gee, sorry for the commission, honey. I didn't want to go back there ever and still don't. But, gift card, so I went online. It took a lot of looking, but I finally got the coffeemaker and a good knife sharpener and only spent 8 dollars more.

The coffee's pretty good. We're not going to have it every day, but for special breakfasts it would be great with croissants or something. DH said that once he got used to it, it was really good but more like a meal than just a drink. Very strong, but not bitter.

Before that, I spent some of the day defrosting the chest freezer. Winter's a good time for that because I can just keep the food out on the back porch, knowing it won't thaw. When it was finally done, washed, dried and back in place, it refused to start up. I had a quiet nervous breakdown because A) we can't afford to lose that much food and B) no way can we afford a new freezer. After a half hour, it finally consented to start working. Whew!!!

However, it's about as full as it's going to get, even after I itemized, organized, and shifted things around between the refrigerator freezer and the chest. I'm going to have to can just about everything from now on.

I have to go now - the kitten's trying to pull a full laundry basket down on herself. She hasn't yet learned that the classic cat gravity tests are best done with the cat at the top, not on the bottom.

2 Carats. I wore it into a fancy touristy shop one time. The owner was all over me. I saw him looking at the ring. It cost me about $45. It was worth it. I didn't enjoy the fawning. But it was worth the cost and fawning to have the story.

2. I was using 2.5 scoops of beans per 8oz. Water

or 4.5 scoops of beans per 24 oz. Water.

Measure before grinding.

This was with a Zevro, which is not made anymore, but is like a French Press in that it steeps for 4 minutes and then filters.

I switched to a knockoff K-cup maker and Safeway Italian Roast, all good and low priced. I only make one cup a day and have earned a laziness merit badge due to age.

That said, I had many a fine French Press coffee. Just adjust the beans to the desired strength.

☕️ Enjoy. ☕️

PS did you tilt the freezer? If they are not "vertical", the fluid needs to rest for a time (like a day when you move one on its side) to accumulate where it needs to be. This came up when I got an SUV to replace the 20 year old pickup that bought the farm. Miss it. Glad that the unit started up OK.

3. Get a freezer alarm

Cheaper than a new freezer, tho maybe it's time to consider that.

This has saved my bacon, literally. Both times were electric issues (tripped breaker, unplugged cord), but still allowed me to fix the issue before food really thawed.

4. Congrats on the french press. Makes good coffee... Your experience reminds me of Denver Cherry Creek Mall

and the Williams Sonoma store there (as well as several other stores). I used to live near there--a few miles away and thus could walk. Well, one does not walk in heels, and designer dress (if I knew what that was...lol). A ritzy $$ woman in tennis togs, sure, but jeans, a walking vest and fitness shoes. Not so much.

Now, I do my grocery shopping directly from my pre-dawn doggy walk at the dog park and arrive with a waist leash wrapped around my coat and my headlamp still on my NorthFace cap. No one seems bothered by that, but heavens, if Williams Sonoma were open that early, what a splash I would make!

6. I prefer a pour over

The simple cone with a filter on a coffee cup has been the coffee system that works best for me. It’s fast, makes a good cup of coffee, and doesn’t take up counter space. Plus, every cup of coffee is freshly made.

I notice you shopped at the Galleria. Are you in the Pittsburgh area?

It's always been my go-to in a power failure. I like the coffee, but DH gets impatient waiting for the water to boil. Our drip machine can be set to go off 15 minutes before the alarm. I always just wanted to try the French press and, again, gift card.

There's a Galleria in the Twin Cities (Minnesota) where I'm located. I don't normally shop there, but I did used to go to Willliams Sonoma once in a while. But not really anymore. It's not just the attitude, but the difficulty in finding things I still need (been cooking since I was a kid and I'm 71 now). My kitchen is about as stocked for anything I'm interested in doing as it can get. W.S. is hella pricey and kinda bougie.

I never turn down All Clad, but my last 2 pans came from Goodwill. I need to replace my brew fermenters (massive mold out, dammit), but I'll go to Northern Brewer or Midwest for them when/if I can afford it. For cheap, I could use a pastry docker, but I've been using a fork for 60 years. It still works. Mainly right now, I need canning supplies and W.S. doesn't do that either. If they did, it'd be twice the cost of the same at the hardware store.

9. We have a William Sonoma in a Galleria, too, lol

I hardly ever go to the Galleria because prices. I’m really well stocked with All Clad, though, because they’re based near Pittsburgh and there’s an All Clad factory sale twice a year at the Washington County fairgrounds.

8. My wife, the coffee drinker on occasion, used a pour through filter.

Even I could do it.
Now she has gotten a Bialetti, good for 2 cups of espresso. She cuts it to make a latte.
This version can be used on our induction cooktop.
I stay away from that.
