Learning to play music can improve older people's brain function, study suggests

Sean Barton, University of Sheffield

Improvising music could help to improve older people's cognitive skills, such as learning and memory, according to research from the University of Sheffield and Western Sydney University.

The study, led by Dr. Jennifer MacRitchie from the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies, is the first to compare how different ways of making music—improvisation versus replication—can affect people's learning and cognitive abilities.

Improvisation tasks people with creating a new melody on the spot, whereas replication asks people to repeatedly play a given melody. Findings show both methods can improve older people's brain functions, but learning by improvisation brings enhanced benefits.

Published in the journal Royal Society of Open Science, the research could change the way music is taught as a brain training exercise and help music teachers tailor their programs so that individuals can be supported to develop skills to the best of their ability.

I've been debating replacing my piano (long gone) with an electronic keyboard (weighted action). I think I won the debate.

"On Feb. 10, 2025, the Christian Motivational Stories YouTube channel published the in-question video. The clip received over 826,000 views, and opened with Trump appearing to say, 'Many people have asked who Jesus is to me. Well, to put it simply, he is everything. He is my savior, my friend, my hope. And the very reason I am able to face each day with strength.' The song, sung in a deep, country music voice not sounding like Trump's voice, begins at around the 4:35 mark in the video."

"Searches of Google, Facebook and other websites located numerous users sharing the video on Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads and X. Also, the majority of the most-liked YouTube comments reflected remarks that people replying believed in the authenticity of the video. One of the most-liked comments read, 'I am humbled and encouraged as a Christian, that a man of the stature of President Trump, can openly declare his testimony openly and proudly and worships the King of kings and the Lord of lords; Christ Jesus. Amen.' "

"However, the video did not authentically depict Trump playing a piano in front of the White House while singing a song about Jesus Christ, nor did it show him speaking about Christianity. The clip featured vocals created with artificial-intelligence (AI) technology, including a fake version of Trump's voice speaking during the first several minutes, followed by a song possibly also generated with AI. A scan of the tune with the Shazam mobile app failed to identify the song. The owner or owners of the YouTube channel did not yet respond to an emailed request for comment."
