05 October 2020
Three scientists who discovered the virus Hepatitis C have won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology.
The winners are British scientist Michael Houghton and US researchers Harvey Alter and Charles Rice.
The Nobel Prize committee said their discoveries ultimately "saved millions of lives".
The virus is a common cause of liver cancer and a major reason why people need a liver transplant.

(12,427 posts)1. Sadly it's a fight to
get insurance to pay for the treatment. They tout the hell out of it on T.V. Ads that it can be cured.
My friend fought and fought and finally his Dr. got him approved for the treatment!

(1,480 posts)3. Fantastic.
In 2011-12, I took a six-month course of drugs to try to knock out Hep C. I took Incivek, Interferon, and one other drug whose name I've forgotten. I don't have any need to discuss side effects. Suffice to say that, based on the experiences of family and friends, what I experienced was luxurious compared to chemo and other drastic, toxic methods of knocking out diseases.
I am lucky. The treatment worked. I am deeply grateful to my doctor, Lornette Mills (Waldorf, Maryland), and the scientists who developed the therapy.
