In India and China, after decades of preference for boys, baby girls are desirable once more. The lack of girls in the two most populous countries in the world, a serious demographic problem, is beginning to be addressed: More and more girls are being born.

(4,415 posts)I seem to remember something on pbs, a documentary I believe, where the crew was filming the consternation over the lack of girls/women. The scene i remember was in a rural village in India where they had all the children of about five to seven years old in a circle doing lessons or may have been playing a game. Out of about twenty children, only 5 were girls. One of the elders did touch briefly on the fact that girls were not wanted and often infant girls were/are killed so that the mother could the more quickly possibly get pregnant with a boy. I believe the same was happening in China, due to the one child policy (which was rescinded a few years ago).
So, so stupid.
