Related: About this forumDoes anyone here know or know of Gabby Haze?
He was a lifelong activist and was associated with the Radical Faeries and Short Mountain Sanctuary (SMS) in Tennessee. He was an old and dear friend of mine going back to 1976. He passed away on Sunday, April 19. Just thought some here might want to know.

(56,136 posts)I met some of the Radical Faeries at the 2nd National March on Washington. I don't know if he was one of them. I am a big GLBT history buff and read a lot about our history.
Again, I am sorry to hear your friend has left us.

(5,384 posts)He was at most of the Rainbow Gatherings, too. His name was also John. He and his wife (yes!), Merril Mushroom, were interviewed in a book called "Rebels, Rubyfruit, and Rhinestones" by James Sears. Look for it!
They married as a gay man and a lesbian woman in the late 60s because 1) they really did deeply love each other, and 2) they both wanted to adopt children and have a family, and saw that as a way to do it. And they did! They adopted 4 children and have remained married all these years. We were neighbors in rural Tennessee. They used to babysit for me! They were both movers and shakers, brilliant, magnetic, outspoken, and unique. I feel fortunate to have known them both.

(56,136 posts)I enjoyed talking with them because they were so different from many there. I had a blast with the Nuns of Perpetual Sin and Dykes on Bikes. I actually got scooped up by one and rode on her hog in the Dyke Parade in DuPont Circle! LOL! I even got to speak to some people who were at Stonewall! I wish I had recorded the experience better. I have some pics, but not many and, well, I was young and pretty so....I was all about the protest and having "fun"
LOL!
I have read "Rebels, Rubyfruit, and Rhinestones" by James Sears. I had to as he was my advisor for an independent study while I was in Grad School. I helped research parts of "Growing Up Gay in the South". It was a pain in the ass! This was way before an active internet and I made a ton of calls to libraries all over the South. I think I still have a copy of "The Myrtle Beach Bitch" which was a gay newspaper back in the day.
I am glad you were able to know him. Being associated with people who are a part of Queer History is important.
Again, sorry for your loss and the loss to our collective!

(5,384 posts)That's awesome that you worked with James Sears. I used a quote from "RRR" about John (Gabby) and Merril in my Master's project.
I debated about whether or not to post here about this, but I am glad I did!
