What is RedNote? The TikTok alternative that doesn't allow showing skin or LGBTQ+ content

With heavy censorship of bodies and LGBTQ+ topics, RedNote might not be everything TikTok refugees are seeking.

With a TikTok ban impending, many users are turning to RedNote as an alternative — but it might not be everything they're seeking. Here's all you should know about the platform before diving in.

What is RedNote?

RedNote is a short-form video platform that doubles as an e-commerce site, offering shopping and the ability to leave reviews on products. It is the alternative to TikTok in China, where it is known as Xiaohongshu, which translates to "little red book."

RedNote recently became the number one app in U.S. stores online ahead of the impending ban. Because the company is based in China, the platform could eventually be subject to a similar ban as TikTok's.

What content is allowed on RedNote?

TikTok refugees have already noted harsh restrictions on RedNote that have resulted in their content being removed or their accounts being suspended, including for mentioning LGBTQ+ identities or for women, wearing a slightly low-cut top.

Americans Eager to Leap from TikTok Frying Pan Directly into RedNote Fire
With a potential TikTok ban looming, American devotees are jumping ship to the Chinese app RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu. They may arrive on the platform jonesing for their fix of cat videos, but they’re likely to find something even worse (!!) than trad wives making their own oat milk.

Within moments on the app, COE analysts found dozens of videos, accounts and hashtags promoting antisemitic, extremist and otherwise hateful content. One post, captioned “Kill the Jews,” includes an image of Santa Claus curb stomping a Jewish man. Other posts promoted a flier from the antisemitic Goyim Defense League and antisemitic conspiracy theories about Jews controlling the government and orchestrating the 9/11 attacks. The subtly-named “GasTheJews” account operates alongside an account promoting white supremacist group Patriot Front, and a clip of the 2022 Buffalo shooter’s livestream, with the hashtag #tnd—shorthand for “Total [N-Word] Death.”

and learning Mandarin. Getting acquainted. Racist, bigoted Americans are getting checked by other Americans.

The American and Chinese citizens will influence each other. They are getting to know each other in spite of our governments.
