Anita Bryant Dies: Singer, Orange Juice Pitchwoman & Anti-Gay Campaigner Was 84
https://deadline.com/2025/01/anita-bryant-dead-anti-gay-activist-singer-1236253063/

Anita Bryant, a Grammy nominated singer, TV personality and orange juice pitchwoman whose show business career was submerged in the public eye by her anti-gay crusades of the late 1970s, died December 16 at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was 84.

Her death was announced in an obituary in The Oklahoman. A cause of death was not revealed.

Born on March 25, 1940, in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Bryant grew up in a devoutly Christian family, with her love of music and singing leading to her own TV show at the age of 12, according to the obituary. At 18 she was crowned Miss Oklahoma, and would soon appear on the CBS variety show hosted by Arthur Godfrey and the Dick Clark-hosted American Bandstand.

... A day without Anita Bryant is like a day without a strident, bigoted harpy screeching her ill-informed prejudices in your face.

For the record: I'm a straight, married, white male septuagenarian with a low tolerance for sanctimonious jerks.

That read “A day without human rights is like a day without orange juice.” at an anti-Anita rally in DC when she was on her campaign of hate. I proudly wore it to my first out-of-closet Gay Pride parade in DC, their second,I think. I was with my boyfriend and still my husband; a local TV cameraman asked if he could take a shot adding “I won’t get your face in it.” I said “It’s okay, to get my face.” So I saw it on the Nightly News at Eleven! A few of my coworkers told me the next day “I saw you on TV last night.” ,Bless’ them all, no one ever scorned me that I was aware of. (I had no idea that she was only three days younger than I.)

PS I won’t miss her at all.

Apparently Anita never accepted that.
I can't imagine that after holding a grand child in your arms that you could ever reject them.
I hope that granddaughter lives a long and happy life.

Even the Southern (Confederate) Baptists rejected her as a candidate, since her primary characteristics were her homophobia and (this was commented on) her continuous carrying of a small Bible as a stage prop.
