Spanish President Slams Musk for Stirring up Hatred After Latest European Meddling
Elon Musk has shifted his focus to Spain after meddling in the politics of Germany and the U.K. over the past week. Trump's co-president amplified a post from a right-wing news source in Spain over the weekend that reported 91% of the rapes in the Catalonia region are carried out by foreign citizens. While the 91% number is true, the report was misleading, considering it represents 20 out of 22 instances, an extremely low rate of violent crime. The number also doesn't necessarily represent "undocumented" migrants, just non-Spanish citizens.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez hit back at Musk for endorsing anti-democratic movements in Europe. Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Spanish fascist dictator Francisco Franco, Sánchez said Musk is leading an "international reactionary movement" that "openly attacks our institutions, stirs up hatred and openly calls for the support of the heirs of Nazism in Germanys upcoming elections," referring to Musk's endorsement of the AfD party in Germany.
Sánchez, like British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ⎯ whom Musk has called to be arrested ⎯ is a favorite target for far-right parties within Spain over his liberal immigration policies.
The President of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, also reacted to Musk, saying "Democracy belongs to the citizens. We will not allow anyone to use the name of Catalonia for anti-democratic interests or to spread hate speech."
