Duffy tells DOT to prioritize areas with high birth rates and high marriage rates

Source: The Hill via MSN, 2/3/25

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in a memo told the Department of Transportation (DOT) to prioritize communities that have higher birth and marriage rates.

“To the maximum extent permitted by law, DOT-supported or -assisted programs and activities, including without limitation, all DOT grants, loans, contracts, and DOT-supported or -assisted State contracts, shall prioritize projects and goals that … mitigate the unique impacts of DOT programs, policies, and activities on families and family-specific difficulties, such as the accessibility of transportation to families with young children, and give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average,” reads the undated memo, which says it is effective immediately.

The memo could impact, among many other programs, the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grant, meaning investments in public transportation including commuter rail, light rail and bus transit.

“The American people deserve an efficient, safe, and pro-growth transportation system based on sound decision-making, not political ideologies. These actions will help us deliver on that promise,” Duffy said.

If the policy is implemented, it would generally hurt Democratic-voting areas. For example, Oregon has low birth and marriage rates, as does New York state and much of the Northeast.

But while blue cities may have lower birth rates than other cities, they are often growing faster because more people are moving there, including more immigrants.

The nation’s falling fertility rate has become a major focus of some conservatives, like Elon Musk, who posts about it often on his social media platform X.

And when Vice President JD Vance spoke at the March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., earlier this month he said: “I want more babies in the U.S.”

unmarried (with one exception -- one commenter mentions both birth rate and marriage rate). (I don't have children either, but nearly everyone seems to be focused on the birth rate aspect of this).

Certain demographics have markedly different marriage rates than others.

Is discrimination against the unmarried OK or no big deal? or justified?

And since Roe didn't survive this court, don't think gay marriage will survive either. So to avoid discrimination, we will have to hetero-marry (and yes, have children too).
