China Installed a Record Capacity of Solar and Wind in 2024 - in numbers

-snip-

In 2020, President Xi Jinping set a goal of at least 1,200 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2030. China met that target last year – nearly six years ahead of schedule – according to NEA data from August. The country has also built nearly twice as much wind and solar as every other country combined.

Hydropower rose 3.2% to nearly 436 GW, and nuclear ticked up 6.9% to reach close to 61 GW. Meanwhile, thermal capacity grew by 3.8% to over 1,444 GW. (The NEA doesn’t break down what powers the thermal capacity, but my educated guess is mostly fossil fuels.)

On the generation side, China, the world’s largest electricity producer, produced 9,418 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024 – a 4.6% increase compared to the year before. Breaking it down, thermal power generation was up 1.5%, hydropower and wind both grew by 11%, and solar led the pack again with a massive 28% boost. Electricity consumption also saw significant growth, jumping 6.8% to 9,852 TWh in 2024.

China is far ahead of everyone else with renewable energy installations, but coal still plays a big role in the country’s energy mix. That said, there are signs it might be starting to kick its coal habit. Coal power permits dropped by a massive 83% in H1 2024 compared to H1 2023, and no new coal-based steelmaking projects were approved during that time.

and then it needs to start phasing out older coal fired generators. As it is, new fossil fuel capacity added now will be around for 50 years or more.

They certainly are doing better than we are in every way.

The U.S. is retiring coal-fired power plants and not building new ones, although some of that retired capacity is being replaced by natural gas-fired generation. However, capacity additions from solar and wind are currently 4 times greater than the amount of natural gas generation being added every year.

...and reducing their coal starts by 83% a year without just replacing them with methane is a much better path than we're taking.

The USA is not adding any new coal generation and we are taking coal plants off-line. China is still building new coal power plants, just not as many as they were.

The new "president" tells people that wind turbines cause cancer and offshore turbines kill whales and that "hydrogen cars explode" - a flat out lie.

The new "president" is making 'Murika a global laughingstock as you probably knew.

Solar and wind are cheaper per Gigawatt than natural gas and much cheaper than coal. Nobody who knows how to read a balance sheet is going to build a new coal power plant in the U.S.

"US failed to lower carbon emissions in 2024, analysis finds"

The nation increased renewable energy, but those environmental gains were washed away by rising pollution from transportation and natural gas.

-snip-

But those trends were offset by growing fossil fuel use in other parts of the economy. Transportation emissions were up 0.8 percent as Americans took to the skies and roads in increasing numbers. Natural gas consumption in the power sector also increased, offsetting a slight decline in coal and negating renewable energy gains. Emissions from buildings were also up slightly, as hot weather increased energy demand.
