The first recorded labour strike in history took place in ancient Egypt circa 1157 BCE when the artisans of the Royal Necropolis at Deir el-Medina organized an uprising in response to late wage rations. The sit-in, which took place in the 29th year of the reign of Pharaoh Ramses III, was recorded in detail on a contemporary papyrus, now known as the "Strike Papyrus", which is housed at the Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy.

The Strike Papyrus was written by the administrative scribe Amennakhte.
