The Strategic Petroleum Reserves current inventory might be the new normal.

(33,643 posts)That's like 2.5 days of world oil consumption.
If it's truly THAT difficult for the USA to replace (I'm talking over, say, a year or so), we've got a lot bigger problems.

(58,333 posts)sold out of the reserve was sold at a high price and was replaced with oil at a low price, as we know the price has dropped consideraly?
Is this story just Murdock's right wing publications trying to make biden look bad?
The Murdock Mafia have to keep stirring their shit-pots, or they won't have anything to sell.
Imagine what they would say if a Democratic president threw paper towels at disaster victims.
FOX is a pox.

(62,102 posts)Sun Jan 8, 2023: U.S. Department of Energy rejects initial bids to resupply oil stockpile
The U.S. Department of Energy has rejected the first batch of bids from oil companies to resupply a small amount of oil to the nations emergency crude oil stockpile in February, according to a DOE spokesperson.
The DOE last month had said it would purchase up to 3 million barrels for delivery to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in February, the first buy since last years record 180-million-barrel release to tame U.S. pump prices.
Following review of the initial submission, DOE will not be making any award selections for the February delivery window, the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
DOE will only select bids that meet the required crude specifications and that are at a price that is a good deal for taxpayers, the spokesperson said.

(62,102 posts)the right deal to come along.
I went out shopping over the weekend. I saw something that looked interesting, but on closer examination, it turned into a case of "close, but no cigar." I'm keeping my powder dry until I see the item that pushes the "this is the one" button.
Thanks for writing.

(113,131 posts)Gee Dubya overfilled it when oil prices were over $100/bbl, probably because the PNAC wanted war over the entire Middle East. It had stayed overfilled until Russia invaded Ukraine and prices started to go up to those levels again.
Here's a fact sheet on prior releases and sales: https://www.energy.gov/ceser/spr-quick-facts
I couldn't find the list of "historic highs," but "historic lows" means it is still at the same level it was in 1985, when there was an adequate amount to stabilize prices, the way it was designed, but not to supply a huge war effort overseas.
Dubya just never got the memo about what it was actually for.
